TaCode Tuesday: Build an IVR App With Automatic Speech Recognition

Posted by Jeff Hodson on October 17, 2017

Forget about talking turkey. At Zang, we’re all-in on tacos. That’s because tacos are so much more than the sum of their parts. More than meat or cheese, more than rice or beans, the taco is a testament to what happens when all the right ingredients meet up under one shell.

In a sense, that’s what Zang Cloud is really all about—giving you all the delicious tools you crave wrapped up in one easy-to-use API.

When we came up with the concept for TaCode Tuesday, they said we were just hungry. And while they weren’t wrong, we still wanted to give our fellow taco lovers from the Zang Cloud community a reason to celebrate. In this three part blog series, we’ll be showing you some of the latest fresh ingredients to make their way into the Zang Cloud recipe book.

Today, let’s explore the new automatic speech recognition capability that has been added to the Zang Cloud service.

Used primarily for IVR applications, Zang’s ASR can programmatically ask a caller to state a response, and then make a decision based on the audio it picks up. Zang’s ASR can already listen for 89 different languages, with an additional 30 being prepped in the kitchen as we speak.

Zang’s ASR can also leverage the gather verb, allowing users to press buttons to give responses as well. Then, when the ASR hears the dial tone, it can attribute a response and take the appropriate next steps.

This feature is designed to enhance accessibility for all users, including your own developers. They’ll love being able to build an ASR solution within the Zang API, rather than having to bounce around.

If you’re feeling a little extra spicy, you can even use Zang’s ASR to get creative and integrate additional user verification checks into an IVR experience. Simply program your ASR to have users repeat back or type out passwords for an extra layer of protection.

Be sure to stay tuned for the next part in this series, when we’ll be covering MMS and SIP registration. Until then, we’ve got some peppers to dice.
